What the September Class Tuning Is Really Worth

A patch note saying "all damage increased by 4%" almost never means 4% more damage. Auto-attacks, pets, trinkets and everything else outside the aura dilute it, and the real figure lands somewhere lower.

So here is the more useful version: the estimated actual throughput change for each spec buffed on reset, and which of them genuinely move.

The specs that meaningfully gained

Feral Druid is the biggest winner at 8-10% single target and 6% AoE. Honest framing though: that lifts it from the bottom of the raid charts into the mediocre range, not into the meta. In Mythic+ it is pure upside — Feral has been solid in keys for several tiers, especially in a physical composition.

Frost Death Knight gets around 7% in both profiles, and Deathbringer is now firmly the better build everywhere thanks to the Howling Blast buff interacting with Northwinds, Bind in Darkness and Cryogenic Chamber.

Beast Mastery Hunter lands about 6.5%, Survival around 6.4% single and 6.8% AoE, and Frost Mage about 6%.

A 6-7% lift moves you within a tier, not across one. It makes a spec viable that people had written off — it does not make it a meta pick.

The middle of the pack

Balance Druid gains 4.1%. It was already decent on most Season 2 raid bosses, so this patches the encounters where it lagged. In Mythic+ it was heavily hyped through the PTR and has not delivered, and this is unlikely to be enough for the very highest keys.

Havoc Demon Hunter gains 3.8%, which arrives on top of consecutive buffs and good gear — it is now edging out Devourer in raid and was already seeing race play for its cleave and burst on Ula'tek specifically.

Restoration Druid takes 4% healing and should feel genuinely strong in raid when played well. Mistweaver gains 3.9% in raid but only 1.5% in Mythic+, because roughly 75% of raid healing is affected by the buff versus about 30% in dungeons.

The buffs that barely register

Protection Paladin is the clearest example of a headline number lying. Blaze of Glory at +150% sounds enormous; the real estimate is 2% single target and roughly 3.5% AoE. It may push you slightly further into Consecrate talents, and that is about it.

Windwalker Monk gains around 2%, and the single-target problem is untouched. Rising Sun Kick gets half the tier set bonus that Spinning Crane Kick does, which is pushing Spinning Crane Kick ahead even in pure single target — the buff does not address that.

Fire Mage gains 2.9% and remains the weakest Mage spec in both raid and keys. Vengeance gains no damage at all, but takes roughly 5.55% less damage, which is a real durability boost. Discipline Priest gains 0% — the Shadow Mend change is a mana quality-of-life fix for Mythic+ with no raid impact.

The Mistweaver 4-piece change from 20% to 25% is worth about 0.1% in raid and 0.5% in keys, and does not change the fact that Mistweaver still wants a 2/2 set in raid.

Should you swap?

Almost certainly not on these numbers alone. A buffed spec in half-finished gear still gets declined from keys, and a 4% lift on a well-geared main beats a 9% lift on an alt with no tier set.

The exception is if you were parked on a spec that was genuinely unplayable in raid — Feral being the obvious case. Everyone else should keep gearing.

GetBoost carries the full gear key bundle so a newly buffed spec has the item level to actually use it.
