WoW: Forever Beta Guide — Access, Level Caps, Zones, Systems and What to Test

The World of Warcraft: Forever beta is live. After a BlizzCon 2026 reveal that dominated the entire show, Blizzard’s permanent level 60 project is finally in players’ hands – and Wowhead has pushed its full guide suite live to match. This is everything you need to know about the test: how to get in, what you can actually reach, which systems are worth your time, and what happens to it all when the servers wipe.

Wowhead’s complete index of Forever coverage sits in the Forever Guide Compendium, which links every class, zone, system and profession guide in one place.

Beta Dates and the Road to Launch

The calendar between now and launch is unusually busy, and several dates matter to players who never touch the beta at all:

  • 17 September 2026 – beta opens, immediately following a live developer Q&A
  • 21 October 2026 – beta closes, per Blizzard’s pre-purchase page
  • 27 October to 3 November – early name reservation for pack owners, first come first served, up to three characters
  • 4 November 2026, 3:00 p.m. PST – launch, included with a standard subscription
  • 9 December 2026 – the first raids open, roughly five weeks after launch

That gives a beta window of just over a month – long enough to be a genuine test rather than a stress weekend, and long enough that the level cap moves partway through.

How to Get Beta Access

There are three routes in, and only one of them is guaranteed. Wowhead’s Forever Beta Overview covers each in detail.

  • Pre-order packs – beta access is bundled with the higher pack tiers, specifically the Skyborne Epic Pack and the Warcraft Forever Collection. The base tier does not include it
  • Free opt-in – you can opt in through your Battle.net account, but this is a lottery rather than a queue. Opting in guarantees nothing, and invite waves are sent at Blizzard’s discretion
  • McDonald’s Australia – an Australian promotion trading reward points for a beta key. Codes have circulated beyond the region, but cross-region redemption is not confirmed

To check whether you already have access, open the Battle.net launcher, click into the Classic section using the icons along the top, and open the drop-down beneath. If World of Warcraft: Forever Beta appears in that list, you are in. If it does not, restart the launcher and confirm you are signed into the correct account before assuming anything has gone wrong.

Game time is not required for the beta, but access is. A subscription alone will not put the client in your launcher.

The Level Cap Is Staged

This is the detail most beta guides get wrong, so it is worth stating plainly. The beta’s ceiling is level 30 – but it does not start there.

The test opens at a level 20 cap, with the cap raised to level 30 after what the developers described as a couple of weeks. Once it reaches 30, it holds there for the remainder of the test. That comes from a developer interview rather than a written Blizzard policy, so treat the exact timing of the increase as flexible.

The practical consequence: plan your first fortnight around the 1–20 experience. Anything you were hoping to test in the twenties will have to wait.

What You Can Actually Play

Within a level 20 to 30 band, more is accessible than you might expect. Forever adds over 1,000 quests across the 1–60 journey, and a substantial share of those land in the early brackets that the beta covers.

  • The reworked 1–20 levelling experience – this is where the redesign of original Azeroth is most visible, and the single most useful thing to give feedback on
  • The Skyborne race and Zephras Isle – Forever’s headline new race and its 1–12 starting zone, playable from the start for pack owners
  • New race and class combinations – six options not possible in original Vanilla: Gnome Priest, Human Hunter, Dwarf Shaman, Orc Mage, Troll Warlock and Undead Paladin
  • Early dungeons – Hall of Thanes sits at the 13–18 bracket and is the first of nine new dungeons, which scale up to Krol’dok at 40–45
  • Professions and Camping – profession contributions to campsites begin around skill 20, which is comfortably inside the beta band

Raids are not part of this. The first two – Barrow Deeps at 10 players and Hyjal Summit at 20 – open on 9 December, over a month after launch.

The Legacy System

Legacy is Forever’s account-wide progression layer and probably the most consequential new system in the game. It is built for players who level alts, chase completion and collect achievements – which is to say, almost everyone who plays Classic seriously.

The structure works like this:

  • Legacy Points are account-wide – earned from challenges across classes, professions, exploration, PvP ranks, reputations, dungeons and raids
  • Spending is per character – each character has its own Legacy Trees and allocates points independently, so a profession-focused alt and a PvP main can build completely differently
  • Caps at launch – up to 16 points spendable per character, with up to 65 points earnable in total
  • Overflow still counts – points beyond the per-character spend cap feed the Legacy Reward Track, which pays out cosmetics

Confirmed perks include Well Rested (increased rested experience gains and a higher rested cap), Bountiful Harvest (more materials from Mining, Herbalism and Skinning) and Reagent Economy (removes reagent costs from certain class abilities). None of these are mandatory, but the levelling-focused perks compound heavily across an account.

The Legacy reward track itself culminates in a spectral bear set: the Spectral Bear Cub pet, the Spectral Bear Tabard and finally the Reins of the Spectral Bear, an epic mount at +100% speed.

Camping

Camping is the other genuinely new system, and it rebuilds the humble cooking fire into a social hub. It is not a tenth profession, despite some early coverage describing it that way – it is an extension of the existing ones.

  • Basic Campfires become campsites – offering rest, vendors, repairs and a profession workspace out in the world
  • Sitting at one grants one-hour buffs – though camp buffs do not stack with the equivalent class buff
  • Professions contribute objects from around skill 20, with a basic camp accepting three contributed objects, one per contributor
  • Cooking can expand capacity – raising the object limit beyond the basic three
  • Blueprints drop from dungeon bosses – unlocking advanced campsite objects

Camping is explicitly a social system, designed to give a group heading into a dungeon something to do together beforehand. Whether it survives contact with players who simply want to queue and go is one of the more interesting things this beta will reveal.

Several Camping details remain unconfirmed and are exactly what the beta exists to settle: the full list of campsite objects per profession, exact buff values, restricted zones, whether camps can overlap, and how the system behaves in contested PvP territory.

Professions Get a Serious Rework

Forever adds over 600 new profession recipes spread across the full skill range, alongside changes to many existing ones. The stated goal is that your profession choice should matter while levelling rather than becoming relevant only at 60.

Cooking sees the most visible change: nearly every crafted food now grants a stat bonus alongside a small experience buff, which turns food from an afterthought into an actual levelling consideration. Combined with campsite contributions, profession workspaces and Blueprint drops, professions are now woven through the whole 1–60 journey.

Rulesets, PvP and Quality of Life

Several structural changes separate Forever from anything Classic has done before:

  • Rulesets instead of realms – choose Normal, PvP or Roleplaying, with no cross-ruleset grouping. Factions remain separate, and characters use two-part names
  • Hardcore arrives after launch – as its own ecosystem with permanent death and isolated progression, with no confirmed date beyond “winter”
  • PvP seasonal progression – points from battlegrounds and open-world combat feeding a rank ladder that unlocks both stat gear and cosmetics, plus a new 15v15 battleground
  • Opt-in transmog – you can disable seeing other players’ transmog entirely, and appearance-sharing rules differ between dungeon Uncommon/Rare drops and epic raid drops
  • Collections and Legacy are account-wide – with exceptions for Hardcore
  • Meeting stones do not summon – they mark instance entrances, but summoning still requires a warlock

Graphics and Presentation

Forever ships with both Classic and modern visual presets, HD and SD character models, and the option to run Classic animations on the HD models – a combination that lets you keep the original feel while gaining the fidelity. Official gamepad support is also included. Wowhead has a dedicated breakdown of the graphics upgrades coming to Forever.

These are independent settings. Changing your own model setting does not alter how another player’s outfit appears to you.

System Requirements

The Battle.net store page confirms the following for Windows:

Requirement Minimum Recommended
OS Windows 10 64-bit Windows 11
Processor 4 cores, 3.0 GHz 8 performance cores, 5.2 GHz boost
Video DirectX 12 capable 4 GB GPU DirectX 12 capable 8 GB GPU
Memory 8 GB RAM 16 GB RAM
Storage SSD, 128 GB available SSD, 128 GB available

Mac players need macOS 12 minimum with an Apple M2 or 9th generation Intel processor, rising to macOS 15 and an M4 for the recommended configuration. The SSD requirement is not optional on either platform.

Does Anything Carry Over?

No. The developers have stated that everyone starts fresh at level 1 when the game launches on 4 November. Nothing you level, earn or unlock during the beta banks you a head start.

That reframes the entire exercise. The beta is not a race – it is a chance to gather information you cannot get from a trailer. The players who get the most out of it will be the ones who:

  • Test the class they intend to main – talents, racials and class fantasy are all being reworked, and this is the first public look at how they feel
  • Learn the reworked early zones – route knowledge is the one thing that genuinely transfers to launch day
  • Experiment with Legacy allocation – working out which perks matter to your playstyle before points actually count
  • Try a new race or class combination – particularly the six new pairings, where the fantasy is untested
  • Run the early dungeons – Hall of Thanes in particular, since it sits neatly inside the cap
  • Report bugs – the whole point, and the only reason the test exists
Blizzard has not published a formal Forever-specific policy on character wipes, copies, retention or transfers. Assume nothing survives, and treat any reported beta character persistence as unconfirmed until it is written down officially.

Planning Tools Worth Using

Even if you are not in the beta, the planning tools are live and free. Wowhead has published a Forever Talent Calculator, a full class and race combination reference, and a roadmap collecting every BlizzCon announcement and the content schedule running into 2027. All three are indexed in the guide compendium, alongside zone, dungeon and raid overviews and a breakdown of the new and updated gear set bonuses.

Given that the cap holds at 60 permanently and progression runs horizontally from there, the character you build on 4 November is likely to be one you keep for years. That is an unusually strong argument for theorycrafting properly before launch rather than rerolling in December.

FAQ

WHEN DOES THE WOW: FOREVER BETA START AND END?

It began on 17 September 2026 PST and runs through 21 October 2026 PST, per Blizzard’s pre-purchase page. Some regional store copy lists 18 September to 22 October in local time.

WHAT IS THE BETA LEVEL CAP?

Thirty, but not immediately. The test opens capped at level 20 and rises to 30 after roughly a fortnight, then holds there.

CAN I GET INTO THE BETA FOR FREE?

You can opt in free through Battle.net, but access is not guaranteed – invites are distributed at Blizzard’s discretion. Only the Skyborne Epic Pack and the Warcraft Forever Collection guarantee a place.

DOES BETA PROGRESS CARRY OVER TO LAUNCH?

No. Everyone starts at level 1 on 4 November. Nothing from the beta banks you an advantage beyond knowledge.

DO I NEED A SUBSCRIPTION FOR THE BETA?

Game time is not required to participate, but beta access is. A subscription by itself will not unlock the client.

CAN I RESERVE MY CHARACTER NAME?

Pack owners can reserve names from 27 October to 3 November, first come first served, for up to three characters. Names taken in the beta itself do not transfer.

WHEN DO RAIDS OPEN IN WOW: FOREVER?

Not at launch. The first two raids – Barrow Deeps for 10 players and Hyjal Summit for 20 – are scheduled for 9 December 2026.

WHAT ARE THE NEW RACE AND CLASS COMBINATIONS?

Six pairings unavailable in original Vanilla: Gnome Priest, Human Hunter, Dwarf Shaman, Orc Mage, Troll Warlock and Undead Paladin.

IS THE LEVEL CAP EVER GOING ABOVE 60?

Blizzard has said no. Sixty is intended as a permanent ceiling, with future content expanding horizontally through new zones, dungeons, raids and systems.

WILL SEASON OF DISCOVERY CONTENT BE IN FOREVER?

Partially, and accounts differ. Some class questline content has carried over with new chains added, while the more experimental systems – unconventional class and role combinations in particular – are not coming at launch.
